Nancy Tichborne is a New Zealand watercolour artist with an international following. Born in Levin in 1942, she received a scholarship from Otago Girls' High School to train in the United Kingdom - at the St Martin's School of Art in London. After this she lived and worked in Great Britain and Hong Kong. Coming back to New Zealand in 1969, she spent several happy years working as a landscape designer in Rotorua. For nearly 20 years Nancy and Bryan then lived on a 4 hectare (11 acre) rural property on Banks Peninsula in the South Island of New Zealand, where they developed a large garden. In 2011 the New Zealand Gardens Trust designated this garden a 'Garden of National Significance'. In May 2014 they sold this property and moved to a much smaller house and garden in the nearby seaside village of Akaroa.

Nancy is probably best known for the annual calendars she and Bryan published for 25 years. These featured mainly floral and cat subjects but also included fly fishing and vineyard themes. Nancy has put out three instructional DVDs on watercolours and has been involved in ten books, both as illustrator and writer. Over 500 people have attended the watercolour workshops she ran for some years but are now discontinued. In addition she has illustrated four stamp issues - commissioned by the postal authorities of Bhutan, Pitcairn Islands and New Zealand.
Nancy's style of watercolours is unique... Her uncompromising technical ability and the way she captures the effects of light on her subjects, has made her one of the world's leading watercolorists. Her work has universal appeal and has found favour in many countries.
In May 2007, Nancy was appointed Patron of Watercolour New Zealand... a post she was honoured to accept and still holds.

Bryan Tichborne was born in Nairobi, Kenya in 1942 - son of an Anglo-Irish/South African father and New Zealand mother. Bryan grew up and was educated in Tanganyika (now Tanzania) and Kenya. After leaving school he joined the Rhodesian army as a private soldier - followed by two years officer training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. His ten years as an infantry soldier included tours in Africa, Hong Kong, Okinawa, South East Asia, Canada and the United Kingdom. With operational tours in mainland Malaysia and Borneo. He and Nancy met in Killarney, Ireland, got engaged in London and were married in Hong Kong. On leaving the army in 1969, they settled in New Zealand - in Rotorua where they lived for the next 25 years. In 1994 they moved to French Farm Valley. Nancy's pioneer ancestors had come to the Akaroa area from England in the early 1850's. Nancy and Bryan have three adult sons and two grandchildren.

Their business - the New Zealand Calendar Company was a small but thriving operation (1984–2017) - firmly based on the premise that one should always treat customers as you would your friends. This website has been up and running for over 15 years - bringing Nancy's exceptional style of watercolours to the world. With the 'retiring' of the calendars and garden has come a slower pace of life for them both. Now living in Akaroa village, they will continue to sell their books, DVDs and prints. Nancy has a studio open alongside their home.
